#BlancheMonnier #HistoricalPhotohraphy#Vintage_Daily One May day in 1901 general of Paris received a strange letter declaring that a prominent family in the city was keeping a dirty secret. The note was handwritten and unsigned, but the attorney general was so disturbed by its contents that he decided to investigate immediately. When the police arrived at the Monnier estate, they had misgivings. Madam Monnier was known in Parisian high society for her charitable works, & had even received a community award in recognition of her generous contributions. Her son, Marcel, had excelled at school & now worked as a respectable lawyer. The Monniers had also had a beautiful young daughter, Blanche, but no one had seen her in close to 25 years.Described by acquaintances as “very gentle and good-natured,” the young socialite had simply vanished in the prime of her youth, just as high-society suitors had begun to come calling. No one gave much thought to this strange episode any longer and the family went about their lives as though it had never happened. The police made a customary search of the estate and did not come across anything out of the ordinary until they noticed a putrid odor coming from one of the upstairs rooms. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the door had been padlocked shut. Realizing that something was amiss, the police smashed the lock and broke into the room, unprepared for the horrors that lay within. When the police officer had opened the window, it was the first time Blanche Monnier had seen the sun in over two decades. She had been kept completely naked and chained to her bed since the time of her mysterious “disappearance” 25 years earlier. Unable to even get up to relieve herself, the now-middle-aged woman was covered in her own filth and surrounded by the vermin that had been lured in by the rotting scraps. The horrified policemen were so overwhelmed by the smell of filth and decay that they were unable to stay in the room more than a few minutes: Blanche had been there for twenty-five years. She was immediately taken to a hospital while her mother and brother were placed under arrest. ( continued in comments )

PART 2: BLANCHE MONNIER Her 75-year-old mother Madame Monnier (pictured), was discovered sitting tranquilly in the lounge room. Police immediately locked up the home and took the mother and brother in for questioning. Blanche was immediately raced to the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Paris where specialists at first felt that she would almost certainly die. During the police investigation, the truth of this chilling tale came to light. When Blanche was 25 years old, her mother found out about her relationship with an older lawyer. Blanche was forbidden to continue this relationship, and so her mother plotted to stop it in its tracks. How? Simple: by locking Blanche in a tiny room until she gave in. She never did.

—Blanche Monnier— She was a prominent young French socialite that lived in the town of Poitiers, France in the late 19th century. At the age of 25, Monnier, fell in love with a local lawyer with the intent of marrying him. But her mother disapproved of her suitor heavily, calling him nothing more than a “penniless lawyer”. In an attempt to keep her from marrying the unsuitable lawyer, her mother locked her away in a tiny room in their attic. She remained locked in that room for the next 25 years, completely devoid of all sunlight and social interaction. Her mother and brother told others she had tragically died and continued to live their lives as normal, while she remained locked away several floors above them for the next few decades. She was finally rescued by French police on May 23, 1901, after police received an anonymous letter alerting them of her incarceration. He mother was promptly arrested, and died of an unknown illness 15 days later, and her brother was ultimately acquitted due to his mental handicaps. By the time Police rescued Monnier, she had already been severely mentally and physically effected by her time in solitary confinement. A once beautiful woman, was now left resembling something out of a grizzly horror film. She was also so mentally and psychologically effected by the years in solitude, that she had to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital for treatment right away. She lived out the remainder of her life in that psychiatric hospital, never recovering.
